Olga L. Mejía, Ph.D.

Dr. Mejía is currently an Assistant Professor at California State University Fullerton’s Counseling Department. She is also a Licensed Psychologist practicing part-time at a local mental health agency. Dr. Mejía received her Ph.D. from the APA-approved Counseling Psychology Training Program at the University of Texas at Austin in August 2002. Her bachelor’s degree is from Smith College (Northampton, Massachusetts) in mathematics.

As a clinician, Dr. Mejía worked in community mental health for several years. She conducted individual, group, and family psychotherapy with Latina/o at-risk youth and their families by providing comprehensive bilingual and bicultural services. She also conducted extensive psychotherapy, focusing on multicultural counseling, with college students in major universities in Texas and California. She completed the APA-approved internship at the University of California Irvine’s Counseling Center in August 2002.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Mejía is strongly dedicated to her research interests, which include immigration and psychology, acculturation, attachment, women’s issues, educational achievement of Latinos, and stress and coping. The title of her dissertation is “Stress and coping among Mexican American migrant and non-migrant college students,” which examines stress levels, social support, and depressive and anxious symptoms in college students from migrant farmwork families.

Further, Dr. Mejía has several publications and topics include: examining individual and societal aspects of immigrating to the U.S., using groups as preventive coping with migrant college students, and promoting career happiness in immigrants. Dr. Mejía has presented at numerous conferences, including the American Psychological Association, the American Counseling Association, the National Multicultural Summit and Conference, and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues Conference.

Dr. Mejía was born in Mexico and immigrated to the United States when she was 9 years old; she primarily grew up in Santa Ana, California.
