Rogelio Serrano, LMFT

Rogelio Serrano is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who currently works for the Pepperdine Resources, Youth Diversion and Education program. His current work centers on developing and providing culturally competent clinical practice with Latino children and families within the Diversion programs of the Orange County Sheriff’s/Coroner Department. He has extensive clinical experience as a family therapist with immigrant and low income families.

Rogelio has worked in community mental health centers in the Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Orange Counties of Southern California. He has extensive experience in the clinical treatment of children with trauma-based disorders and aggressive behaviors. He has worked in school, community, home, and outpatient treatment settings. His work has been primarily with Mexican and African-American children and families. He has worked as a state certified Anger Management facilitator for Domestic Violence Batterer’s Treatment Programs and has extensive clinical experience in group treatment for aggression in adults and children. He formerly held a position as a Clinical Quality Assurance Supervisor for a Children’s Mental Health program in an outpatient clinic that serves primarily foster children and victims of sexual abuse. Rogelio also has extensive experience in the utilization of play therapy interventions with Mexican-American and Mexican immigrant children. He has been a presenter for the California Association for Play Therapy on culturally innovative treatment practices to reduce aggression with children and adolescents.

Rogelio received his Bachelors Degree in Psychology with a Minor in Counseling from California State University, San Francisco in 1998. He later received his Master of Science in Counseling from California State University, Fullerton in 2001. His thesis was titled, “Culturally Sensitive Play Therapy to Establish Rapport with Mexican-American Children”. He is currently working towards his Clinical Doctorate in Psychology at Pepperdine University, Graduate School of Education and Psychology. He is a clinical member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT), Association for Play Therapy (APT), and American Psychological Association (APA).
He has received numerous awards and recognitions including a special recognition from the County of San Bernardino, Board of Supervisors for establishing innovative bilingual/bicultural programs for adolescents in the Ontario/Montclair Unified School District. Rogelio resides in Orange County California and divides his time between his professional responsibilities and family in Southern California and his family in Southern Mexico.
